Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the University Course Reviews website and related services (the "Platform"). The Platform allows verified university students to submit and read reviews about university courses and units.
By accessing or using the Platform, you agree to be bound by these Terms. If you do not agree, you must not use the Platform.
1. Definitions
- "We", "us", "our" means the Platform operators.
- "You", "user" means any person who accesses or uses the Platform.
- "Content" means any text, reviews, comments, ratings, usernames, or other material submitted to the Platform.
- "University" means a recognised higher education institution.
2. Eligibility and Verification
2.1 You must be at least 18 years of age to use the Platform.
2.2 To submit reviews, you must verify your status as a university student using a valid university-issued email address.
2.3 Verification confirms eligibility only. It does not imply endorsement of your views by any university or by us.
3. User Accounts and Display Names
3.1 You may be required to create an account to submit Content.
3.2 You may choose a display name during sign-up. Display names do not need to reflect your real name.
3.3 While your public display name may be anonymous, we retain internal account identifiers and verification details in accordance with our Privacy Policy.
3.4 You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activity conducted under your account.
4. Nature of Reviews and Disclaimer
4.1 Reviews published on the Platform represent the personal opinions and experiences of individual users.
4.2 Reviews do not constitute statements of fact and must not be relied upon as factual or professional advice.
4.3 We do not endorse, verify, or guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any Content.
5. Prohibited Content
You must not submit Content that:
- names, identifies, or is reasonably capable of identifying individual lecturers, tutors, professors, or other university staff;
- is defamatory, misleading, or likely to cause harm to the reputation of an individual or organisation;
- contains profanity, hate speech, harassment, threats, or abusive language;
- includes personal information about any individual;
- infringes intellectual property rights;
- is unlawful, deceptive, or otherwise objectionable.
6. Automated Screening and Moderation
6.1 All submitted Content is subject to automated screening, including but not limited to:
- detection of profanities or offensive language; and
- detection of references to identifiable individuals.
6.2 Content may be held for review, restricted, edited, or rejected based on the results of automated screening and human moderation.
6.3 We operate a moderation workflow under which Content may take up to 24 hours from submission to be approved, rejected, or otherwise moderated.
6.4 We are not obliged to publish any Content.
7. Moderation Decisions and Removal of Content
7.1 We reserve the right, at our sole discretion, to:
- remove or modify Content;
- suspend or terminate user accounts; or
- restrict access to the Platform,
without notice where we reasonably believe this is necessary to comply with law, protect users, or manage legal risk.
7.2 If Content is removed following a complaint or legal concern, we are not required to notify the author or provide reasons.
7.3 Users may report Content they believe breaches these Terms. We aim to review reports promptly but do not guarantee any specific response time.
8. Defamation and Complaints Process
8.1 If you believe Content published on the Platform is defamatory or unlawful, you may contact us using the details provided on the Platform.
8.2 Complaints should include sufficient detail to identify the Content and the nature of the concern.
8.3 We will assess complaints in good faith and may remove or restrict access to Content where appropriate.
9. Intellectual Property
9.1 You retain ownership of the Content you submit.
9.2 By submitting Content, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, worldwide licence to use, reproduce, display, and distribute the Content for the purposes of operating and promoting the Platform.
10. Privacy
10.1 We collect and handle personal information in accordance with our Privacy Policy and the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).
10.2 By using the Platform, you consent to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personal information as described in our Privacy Policy.
11. Limitation of Liability
11.1 To the maximum extent permitted by law, we exclude all liability for any loss, damage, or harm arising from:
- Content published by users;
- reliance on reviews or ratings;
- removal or failure to publish Content; or
- use of or inability to use the Platform.
11.2 Where liability cannot be excluded, our liability is limited to the minimum extent required by law.
12. Indemnity
You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from any claim, loss, or damage arising from:
- your breach of these Terms; or
- Content you submit to the Platform.
13. Changes to the Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. Continued use of the Platform after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
14. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of Australia. You submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the relevant Australian state or territory.
